The haematite from Florence Mine has been finely ground and it is the particle size which determines the rich deep red of the pigment.  In fact, the name of the mineral is derived from the Greek for blood - ‘haema’. It can be used as a drawing medium by itself or as a ground for the basis of a charcoal drawing.  It can also be mixed with other ingredients to make egg tempera or acrylic paint, or as a glaze for ceramics.
